  Chapter One

  THE MAPPING NEVER STOPS.

  As long as a starship computer system has the power to function and sensor inputs to process, some part of that system is analyzing those inputs, comparing the results with its own internal image of the external universe and correcting that image when differences are detected. Even under battle conditions—especially under battle conditions, when even the smallest of discrepancies between image and reality could conceivably spell disaster—this nanosecond-by-nanosecond updating is going on.

  The only time the updating stops is when the sensors encounter an anomaly, something that is simply outside the parameters of what the computer, acting on both its programming and its experience, defines as “normal.” Of course, the incoming data continues to be stored, so that, when and if the anomalous data is proven to be correct, it is still available.

  The first thing the computer does when it encounters such an anomaly is run a complete diagnostic of the sensors involved, then of itself. If no malfunctions, no miscalibrations are found, it alerts the crew and awaits instructions.

  “Come in.”

  Lieutenant Commander Data did not look up from the tricorder as the door to his living quarters hissed open and Commander Geordi La Forge stepped inside. His cat, Spot, on the other hand, darted under the bed.

  “Data, does that cat hate everyone? Or is it just me?” Geordi shook his head. “Never mind. Just tell me, why did you want to see me? And what is so fascinating about your tricorder?”

  “I do not believe she hates anyone,” Data said, still not looking up. “Most of the material I have been able to access indicates that, except when directly threatened, cats are essentially indifferent to humans.”

  “I wouldn’t call that a display of indifference,” Geordi said, glancing toward the space beneath the bed, where Spot’s high feline body temperature still produced a distinctive infrared signature in his VISOR even though the cat had retreated to the far side, completely out of sight.

  “Perhaps not,” Data said, finally looking up from his tricorder, “but neither is it open hostility.”

  “I’ll take your word for it,” Geordi sighed, wondering if beating around the bush was part of Data’s continuing effort to be more human, “but you still haven’t told me why you wanted to see me.”

  “As you know, I have been observing Spot’s behavior for some time now, and I often find it most intriguing. For example, I have noticed that Spot will often dart suddenly from one place to another. I have been unable to detect any visual, auditory, or olfactory stimulus to which she might be responding, so I have been attempting—”

  “You’re using a tricorder to find out what sets her off? Data, she’s just being a cat! I’m no expert on feline behavior, but even I know that much. Something in her tiny little cat mind makes her decide she has to be somewhere else—immediately. And she goes.”

  “If you are suggesting that her actions are the result of random synaptic discharges or similar phenomena, I do not believe that to be the case.”

  Geordi chuckled as he shook his head. Data no longer took every remark as literally as he once had, but he still had his moments. “That’s not what I meant, Data. I just meant—actually, I don’t know what I meant. But nobody knows what a cat thinks about, if anything. Maybe she just suddenly remembers that she liked it a lot better someplace else, so she decides to check it out. You should probably get Counselor Troi down here. If you could get Spot to perform for her, maybe she could at least tell if Spot is frightened or happy or whatever it is cats feel.”

  Data seemed to consider the advice for a moment. “That is an excellent suggestion, Geordi,” he said. “I will ask the counselor.”

  “Then you won’t be needing me.” Geordi started to turn toward the door.

  “I still would like your assistance, Geordi.”

  Geordi sighed again and turned back to Data. “All right. But you still haven’t told me just what it is you want me to do.”

  “I would like you to watch Spot.”

  Geordi shook his head. “No, thanks, Data. I did that once, remember? We just didn’t get along. Maybe Worf—”

  “I did not mean I wished you to care for her, only to watch her. A possibility exists that your VISOR might enable you to detect something that would not be detectable either by myself or by the tricorder.”

  “When she does her ‘I-gotta-be-someplace-else’ act?”

  “That is correct, Geordi. I realize it might take some time before such an event occurs, but—”

  “Hold on a minute. You want me to just sit around and stare at your cat? For hours? I don’t think so. Look, Data, I don’t want to dampen your scientific curiosity, but I really think you’re wasting your time. Cats have been around since the pyramids and no one’s been able to figure them out yet. And frankly—no offense intended, Spot—it’s probably because there’s nothing there to figure out.”

  “Perhaps you are right, Geordi, but there is a great deal of research indicating that cats and other animals are able to sense phenomena that humans can not. For example, there is strong statistical evidence that both cats and dogs sense impending earthquakes.”

  “Statistical?” Geordi frowned skeptically. “Sure, lots of people talk about how their cat or dog went bananas before an earthquake, but that’s anecdotal, not statistical.”

  “I understand that, Geordi, and that is not the phenomenon I was referring to. There were a number of statistical studies made of the classified advertisements in newspapers in areas in which earthquakes occurred. In a significant percentage of instances, t
he number of advertisements for missing and runaway pets, both feline and canine, increased by fifty percent or more in the week immediately prior to a significant earthquake.”

  Geordi grinned. “Data, unless I missed a Starfleet bulletin recently, an earthquake is one of the few hazards a starship doesn’t have to worry about, so I seriously doubt that that’s what’s making Spot twitchy.”

  “Of course not, Geordi. I merely cited that as an example of animal behavior that has never been adequately explained. However, there is much that has never been fully understood about the natural abilities of not only cats but of other animals. Migrating birds, for example—”

  “Data, don’t go mystical on me. Birds have a directional sense. I don’t remember how it works, exactly, but I do know that scientific explanations were found all the way back in the twentieth century.”

  “That is precisely my point, Geordi. Among the explanations for certain migratory birds was a sensitivity both to earth’s magnetic field and to polarized light. Even lower life-forms were found to have similar sensitivities. Certain worms, for example, determined ‘up’ and ‘down’ in response to the magnetic field.”

  Geordi laughed. “You’re joking, right? Worms?”

  “I am not joking, Geordi. A number of experiments were conducted with worms taken from Earth’s southern hemisphere to the northern, where the direction of the vertical component of the magnetic field was essentially reversed. The worms consistently behaved in ways that indicated they thought up was down and vice versa.”

  “With a worm, how can you tell?”

  “I do not know, Geordi. However, I can access the complete text of the reports if you wish. The rationale of the experiments—”

  “No, thanks, Data. Thanks, but no thanks.”

  As if to add her own commentary, Spot chose that moment to dart from under the bed, streak across the floor, and disappear behind Data’s desk.

  “I didn’t see a thing,” Geordi said hastily as he turned to the door, “and I’m probably needed in engineering.”

  A moment later, to his surprise, the voice of the computer confirmed that he actually was needed in engineering, on a matter involving anomalous sensor data. It added that Data’s presence on the bridge would also be appreciated regarding the same matter.

  Captain Jean-Luc Picard was in his quarters, grimly working on the seemingly never-ending crew fitness reports, when the computer, in effect, threw in the towel and asked for help. Picard, who welcomed any interruption of this particular duty, quickly abandoned the barely started reports and headed for the bridge even though he knew he could have just as easily handled the situation—whatever it turned out to be—from his quarters. Lieutenant Commander Data and Commander La Forge were far better qualified than he to deal with whatever the computer was worrying about—Mr. Data if the anomaly proved to be out there in the real world, Mr. La Forge if it proved to be the result of some momentary glitch within the Enterprise itself. Nonetheless, if rank had its obligations—such as having to struggle with the fitness reports—it also had its privileges, such as being able to delay that particular struggle on a relatively flimsy pretext.

  Data was already seating himself at the ops console when Picard emerged onto the bridge. A red-haired ensign—Curtis, Picard noted automatically, among the top ten percent in her class last year at the Academy—sat at the conn. The unmoving starfield on the main viewscreen indicated that the Enterprise had dropped out of warp drive, standard procedure under the circumstances.

  Picard gave Data a few seconds to pull the necessary information from his console, then asked, “What seems to be the problem, Mr. Data?”

  “There are two anomalies, Captain, both related to a star approximately half a parsec distant, bearing forty-two-point-six-three, mark twenty-seven-point-one-four. Visual spectroscopic analysis indicates a middle-aged star similar to Earth’s sun. It has at least four planets, but there is also a substantial ring of what appears to be nebular dust centered on the ecliptic. Such a ring would be typical of a young sun whose planets had not yet formed but decidedly atypical of a mature sun with an existing family of planets.”

  “You said it ‘appears’ to be nebular dust.” There was no change in Picard’s voice or demeanor, but an anticipatory tingle rippled up his spine, as it always did when the Enterprise encountered something new and unexpected in unexplored space. “What, precisely, is its makeup?”

  “That is the second anomaly, Captain. The sensors cannot obtain a reliable analysis. There is interference of some sort, possibly a systemwide energy field.”

  Picard frowned. Red flags, born of other encounters and other times, sprang up in his mind, intensifying the tingle and partially changing its nature, from anticipatory to apprehensive. “A shield, you mean?”

  “No, Captain, a different sort of interference. The sensors do not appear to be blocked in any way, but the information they return from the dust cloud varies widely from moment to moment and is therefore obviously unreliable.”

  “And the source of this interfering energy field, if that’s what it is?”

  “Unknown, Captain. I cannot be certain that it is even an energy field. It is possible that the interference is the result of a property of space itself in that region. Were we to approach more closely, however, the sensors might be able to—”

  “Not yet, Mr. Data. What you describe indicates the possible existence of a highly advanced technology. It also suggests that the possessors of that technology feel they have something to hide. It is not a situation to charge into blindly.” He turned to Lieutenant Worf at the tactical station. “Is there any indication of communication traffic, Mr. Worf, either subspace or old-style?”

  “None in the system, sir,” the Klingon rumbled, then paused, his massive fingers moving deftly across the console before him. “There is a faint EM signal originating at least a quarter parsec outside the system.”

  “Source, Mr. Data? Or is it subject to interference as well?”

  “The interference appears to be limited to the star system itself, Captain. I will redirect the long-range sensors.”

  “Mr. Worf, the nature of the signal? Information content?”

  “It appears to employ a form of frequency modulation, sir. The limited bandwidth indicates that whatever information is present is almost certainly limited to audio. The signal is being fed into the computer for analysis.”

  “Put it on the speakers as soon as you get anything, intelligible or not.”

  “Yes, sir.”

  As Picard turned back to Data and the viewscreen, Commander Will Riker, looking a bit flushed but otherwise presentable, strode onto the bridge. “Holodeck exercise,” he said hastily as he joined Picard in the command area behind Data and Ensign Curtis. “Counselor Troi convinced me I should try the new table-tennis program. That game is not as easy as it looks. Now, what have we run into that stumped the computer?”

  Tersely, Picard explained. As he finished, the image on the main viewscreen went from the slow-moving starfield in front of the Enterprise to a seemingly stationary one. In the center of the screen was a faint, metallic dot. A ship of some kind?

  “Maximum magnification,” Picard ordered, the tingle spreading out from his spine to brush at his entire body. “Is that the source of the EM signal?”

  “It would appear to be, Captain,” Data said.

  On the screen, the dot further confirmed Picard’s suspicion by expanding into a slowly rotating ship. Without realizing he was doing it, he leaned forward a fraction of an inch in his chair, as if by that minuscule motion he could bring the ship closer, force it to reveal its secrets more quickly. The forward section, he saw, was an almost featureless cylinder. At the rear of the cylinder, protruding dozens of meters in all directions like a massive Elizabethan collar, was a disk-shaped shield. Beyond the shield, only partly visible from this angle, was a second, smaller segment, presumably containing the ship’s drive.

  “And there is only the one ship?” P
icard prompted.

  “The only one in that immediate vicinity, Captain,” Data replied. “We would have to conduct a comprehensive sensor scan of the entire volume of space surrounding the star to determine if other ships exist but are not generating detectable subspace or EM signals.”

  “Life-forms, Mr. Data?” Picard had voiced the question in one form or another more times than he could remember, in more parts of the galaxy than once he could have dreamed of seeing, but each time it was as fresh as the first, an unneeded reminder of one of the central reasons for the existence of the Enterprise and of Starfleet itself.

  “Approximately ten thousand humanoid life-forms in the forward cylinder, Captain, and abundant plant and animal life.”

  “A generation ship?”

  “It would appear to be, Captain. It is rotating at a rate that would provide approximately one gravity at the outermost point of the cylindrical habitat. And the drive is pre-impulse, powered by a primitive form of nuclear fission,” Data said, but even as he spoke, the stubby rear section of the ship came into view, not a cylinder but a squat oval with numerous protrusions that—

  Abruptly, a sinking sensation in Picard’s stomach muted the tingle that still played along his spine. Protruding haphazardly from the rear of the ship was a series of what must once have been massive jets. But now they were barely recognizable, looking as if they had partially melted and then rehardened into Dalilike caricatures of themselves.

  The ship was, Picard realized, a derelict, but a derelict with roughly ten thousand living, intelligent beings aboard.

  Chapter Two

  EACH NIGHT when finally sleep approached, Koralus vowed that when he awakened he would make the announcement. He would share with the Ten Thousand the secret—the burden—that had dominated his life for more than ten years.

  Each morning, faced with the reality of the ship and the Ten Thousand whose lives he was planning to disrupt, he would hesitate. Most mornings he got no farther than the entrance to the dozen flights of metal steps that led to the long-vacant bridge. Perhaps one time in ten, he would reach the top and speak the code that unlocked the door, only to enter and stare at the now-useless controls and the slowly turning but otherwise unchanging starfield that still filled the forward port. A dozen times in the last year, he had gone so far as to activate the seldom-used shipwide system of screens and speakers, but each time, when the acknowledgments from the sector leaders had begun to come in and he had seen their expectant, trusting faces one by one, his resolve had failed and he had passed it off as simply another test of the system.
